Since 1993 Nichol has been creating wines exclusively from grapes grown in Naramata. Our vineyards, on a pocket of land tucked against steep heat-radiating rock cliffs, are the ideal place to craft wines demonstrating intense fruit and refreshing acidity. Our soils - glacial till, granite shards, bedrock and silt - create a site that is extreme and unique.

Listed below are the notes for our current releases. If you would like to discuss any of our wines, please feel free to send us an email at sales@nicholvineyard.com or find us on Twitter or Facebook to share your thoughts.

2010 Pinot Gris

Tasting Note:
Light salmon in colour. A nose of peach pit, pear skin and eastern spices wrapped neatly in a delicate white flower perfume. Really aromatic this year. The palate is dry but fresh and vibrant with solid density and mouth coating flavours of pear, apple skin and mineral. Great Pinot Gris typicity. The finish is fairly long and very vibrant.  We wish we could have made more!

2010 Gewurztraminer

Our Gewürztraminer comes from an acre planted behind the winery 1400 feet above sea level. This site gives us cooler nights than the rest of the vineyard a slightly later harvest date resulting in lots of natural acidity in our gewürztraminer. We therefore make a fairly dry wine driven by citrusy acidity that reflects this site and the type of fruit it produces.

2010 Tasting Note
As a reflection of 2010 this wine is focused, brisk and mouthwatering. It has typical gewürztraminer aromatics of roses and lychee but also shows grapefruit pith and lemon/lime characters. On the palate this is light bodied,
with fresh acidity and a decidedly grapefruit tinged finish. Fresh and lively it is an awesome thirst quencher. Note: we love this with lighter dishes like ceviche or lemony chicken. Fresh and vibrant foods excel with this years gewürztraminer.

2009 9 Mile Red

2009 will only be the second vintage of 9 Mile Red we have made though we have been growing the grapes that make up this wine for over 20 years. It is a very small production blend of our St. Laurent with our Pinot Noir. The impetus for this wine was to make something that could be consumed slightly earlier than some of our other reds while still being made in the same qualitative mold (it's really just a selection of specific barrels). Basically, we taste through barrels of our St. Laurent and barrels of our Pinot Noir and find the ones that show the brightest aromatics, softest tannins and most forward fruit character.  The grapes that go in to this wine literally grow right next to each other, just outside the winery doors. It’s a grueling night of trial tasting but someone has to do it.

2009 Tasting Note
Medium, bright ruby in colour with aromas of blueberry, raspberry and sage. There is a little apparent oak on the nose and palate that will integrate quickly. Medium bodied, fruit driven and fresh with moderate tannins and fresh acidity. Think Pinot Noir but with more effusive aromatics. This is fantastic with BBQ salmon or duck with a cherry jus.

2009 Cabernet Franc

Our Cabernet Franc is sourced from 13 rows of vines at the front of our property and from an acre planted 700 meters below the winery. We pick and farm our Cab Franc with an eye to optimal maturity, through very low yields, combined with a focus on acid retention.  We want this wine to taste and smell like Cabernet Franc should; savory, minerally and full of berry fruit character all enhanced by focused acidity.

2009 Tasting Note
The 2009 Cab Franc has a dark ruby core with ruby rim. Blueberries, tobacco leaf, cardamom and forest floor on the nose. Full bodied, with a core of bright berry fruit wrapped in chalky tannins. Tobacco  leaf and bouquet garni on the driven, bright finish. Classic Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2017.

2009 Syrah

Our Syrah vineyard was planted in 1990 and is located in the in the north east corner of the property behind the shed.
In 2009 we handpicked the Syrah on the 10th of October which was earlier than usual but our ripeness and flavor profiles were bang on so we pulled the trigger and picked (it was a good thing too as it went to -9 C later in the week). We strive to achieve all the amazing characteristics of cool climate Syrah; elegance, focus, aromatics and the amazing balancing act between ripe fruit and savoury notes that Syrah grown in a cool climate can manifest so profoundly.

2009 Tasting Note
Dark ruby core with a vibrant ruby rim. Aromatics of lilac, sweet game meats, pepper and sage. Full bodied with red to dark berry fruity, damson plum and sage. There are ample tannins here and we see this entering a good drinking window by the fall of next year with another 5 to 8 years ahead of it. Drink 2012-2020
